It is always best to keep your natural teeth when you can. However, sometimes this procedure is necessary to preserve the health of the rest of your smile. Many patients worry about tooth extractions because of some misconceptions they have heard. Today, we’ll be busting four common myths of tooth extractions so you can be better informed.

Myth 1: Tooth Extractions Hurt

The most common myth out there is that tooth extractions are painful. Fortunately, with modern dental techniques and technology, having a tooth pulled isn’t nearly as uncomfortable as it was back in the day. Before your procedure begins, your dentist will numb the area with a local anesthetic, so you shouldn’t be able to feel the area that they are working on. Other sedation options, like nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, are also available to make your experience even more comfortable.

Myth 2: It Takes a Long Time to Recover from Tooth Extractions

It usually only takes me one or two weeks for the socket to heal after an extraction. However, most patients only experience soreness and discomfort for a few days after their procedure. This can be managed with your over-the-counter and prescribed pain relievers. By carefully abiding by your dentist’s aftercare instructions, you should be back to your normal schedule quickly.

Myth 3: Only Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Extracted

This is the case for some people, but everyone is different. It is common to need your wisdom teeth removed, but not everyone does. Some people need additional teeth to be removed for one reason or another. This can include severe decay, and injury, or limited space in the mouth.

Myth 4: Extracted Teeth Don’t Need to Be Replaced

Depending on why you need to have your tooth extracted, you may need to have it replaced to prevent future oral health issues. When there are gaps in your smile, your other teeth will naturally shift around to try to fill in space. The jawbone no longer needs to be stimulated in that area either, so it shrinks over time. Talk to your dentist about tooth replacement options if needed so you can avoid further dental issues.

Tooth extractions aren’t as uncomfortable as you may think. By putting these myths behind you, your smile will be good as new in just a matter of time!

About the Author

Dr. Jason Kaopua is an experienced dentist who has been working in the field for more than two decades.
